What are Bio-Identical hormones?
Bio-Identical hormones are compounds that exactly match the natural hormones that your body makes on its own when it is in balance. To be truly Bio-Identical we believe that the hormones should be tested to insure that they are at the proper levels.

What can I expect?

Call the office to schedule an appointment with Michele.  Please let the receptionist know that you wish to be seen for a hormone consultation. Print the evaluation above and the first 4 forms under the patient forms tab.

Michele will review your history and do a brief exam.  Due to the complexity of the evaluation and time limitations, we are unable to perform an annual exam/pap smear at the time of a hormone evaluation.

Testing offered includes saliva and blood testing.  These charges are not included in your office visit.  Tests vary in price from $30 to $75 for individual tests to $299 to $369 for comprehensive panels.   See below for details on insurance billing.

If salivary or blood testing is appropriate for your individual situation, you will be instructed on collection and payment.

Once your test results are received at the clinic, we will contact you about a follow up visit to review the results.

What is Salivary testing and why not use blood testing?
The Salivary glands in the mouth contain all of the natural hormones at levels that reflect the rest of the body tissues.  By collecting Saliva specimens in a small tube we can get an accurate representation of the bodies hormone levels. Blood tests from veins actually shows only the levels of hormones “left over” after the tissues have used up their portion. NASA uses Salivary testing of Cortisol levels as a way to monitor stress on Astronauts. Lastly, there is no pain involved.

Why use hormone creams?
Bio-Identical hormones generally should be supplied in a way that bypasses the GI system. When hormones are absorbed rather than swallowed they go directly to the tissues rather than be altered by the liver. This is called the “first pass effect”. We use creams because we have better control of the day-to-day dosing in case we need to make changes.

Is Bio-Identical hormone replacement therapy FDA approved?
No. Even though Bio-Identical hormones are legal to prescribe and use in the United States the FDA has not given its approval for their use. Part of the problem is that everyone will require their own unique combination of hormones. There are also no placebo-controlled studies to prove whether Bio-Identical hormones are safer than standard hormone replacement.

Does insurance cover Bio-Identical Hormone replacement therapy and testing?

Generally insurance companies do not pay for Bio-Identical hormones. The main reason is lack of FDA approval. They may cover issues related to under active thyroid problems.  At your visit you will be provided with information on how you can submit your bill for testing to your insurance company.

Once I start my hormones, how quickly should I feel better?
We typically see improvement within the first 2 to 3 weeks but it may take up to 8 weeks to really notice the full effect from your hormones. We want to achieve balance without overdosing you. We do not consider overdosing of hormones to be Bio-Identical. Using the lowest amount of hormone to get balance is actually the recommendation of the FDA and the American College of OB/GYN.

What is Adrenal fatigue?
The Adrenal gland produces Cortisol which controls our response to stress. During times when we are under excess stress our body’s ability to produce proper levels of Cortisol can be affected. Fatigue, foggy mind, poor sleep, and weight gain are common symptoms of Adrenal fatigue. Proper nutrition, exercise, and short term Cortisol supplementation can reverse this problem.
